Frequently Asked Questions

  • Beginning therapy with Boreal Therapy Collective is easy and requires no referral. You can book your initial assessment here.

  • Yes, we offer online/virtual therapy to residents of Alberta through Jane App, a web-based electronic health record system based in Montreal, Quebec. Jane App is fully compliant with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

  • We work with children (age 6+), teens, and adults of all ages.

  • Yes, we offer in-person and virtual couples counselling.

  • Yes, we offer in-person and virtual family therapy.

  • During your first appointment, you and your therapist will get to know one another. Your therapist will ask you questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an assessment. Depending on how much you share, the assessment phase can last anywhere from one to three appointments. The assessment is critical. It helps you and your therapist understand your goals, and it helps your therapist develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving these goals.

  • Most people will have a therapy session every two weeks, and we recommend this for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less). Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every six to eight weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.

  • Family mediation offers separating parents an alternative to litigation (where each co-parent typically retains a lawyer). Family mediation fosters open communication, collaboration, and mutual decision-making, aiming to prioritize the well-being of the children above all else.

By engaging in family mediation, you and your co-parent will develop an agreement that outlines what custody, parenting time, and more will look like post-separation or divorce.

  • The agreement made in family mediation is not itself legally binding. However, once an agreement has been reached, our family mediator can help you complete the necessary court documents to finalize the agreement. You will need to file these documents at the courthouse and await a scheduled court date. On your court date, both you and your co-parent will inform the judge of the agreement reached through family mediation. The judge has the ability to deny the agreement if it does not align with current legal principles or is not in the best interests of the children involved. If there are no concerns present, the judge can formalize the agreement with a court order. Once an order is granted, the agreement is legally binding.

  • No, family mediators do not represent parties in court (remember, family mediators are neutral third parties, working in the best interests of the family unit and the children). A family mediator will support you and your co-parent in developing a parenting agreement that you can file and present at court. You can file and present this agreement with or without legal representation.

  • There is no guaranteed success in family mediation. Successful family mediation requires the flexibility of both co-parents and a focus on what is in the bests interests of the children. You can expect your family mediator to support you and your co-parent in resolving any disputes with empathy and professionalism. Your family mediator will create a safe and confidential space for open communication, where each of you can express your concerns and preferences freely. The family mediator will help you explore options and alternatives, encouraging constructive dialogue and collaboration to reach mutually acceptable solutions.

  • You bet! If an agreement has been reached outside of family mediation, our family mediator can help you complete the necessary court documents to finalize the agreement. Once the order is granted, your agreement is legally binding.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, you must do so at least 48 hours prior to your session. Late cancellations (less than 48 hours’ notice) and no-shows will be billed at the full session rate. This policy is strictly enforced.

To help you remember upcoming appointments, we send 72 hour reminder emails. This gives you 24 hours to cancel your appointment (and allows us to fill the spot with someone in need of mental health care).

  • Monday-Thursday: 9:00am-8:30pm
    Friday: 9:00am-5:00pm
Saturday and Sunday: By appointment only

  • Initial assessments are billed at a rate of $330.00 for a 90-minute appointment. Follow-up sessions are billed at a rate of $220.00/hour or $330.00/90-minutes (you can choose your preferred appointment length when booking).

Our social workers offer direct billing to 25+ benefit providers. With your consent, we will always direct bill first.

Please note that our Registered Psychiatric Nurses are typically ineligible for direct billing.

If we are unable to direct bill, you can pay via email money transfer or credit card. You will be given a receipt once payment has been collected. For more information on benefit coverage, click here.

  • Family mediation services are billed at a rate of $250.00 per hour ($62.50/15-minutes). Family mediation services include appointments, telephone calls and emails, and paperwork completion.

While one-on-one consultations, communication, and paperwork will be billed individually, joint consultations, communications, and paperwork carry the benefit of being split equally between both parties (eg: for a one-hour session, each co-parent will pay $125.00).

When compared to the expenses typically incurred in traditional litigation, family mediation tends to represent a significantly more cost-effective option.
